Controversies, Movies, and Deaths!

On this jam-packed episode of Follow the Sound, we discuss more music history. Join us as we talk about Janis Joplin‘s 9 week run at number 1 on the U.S. charts in 1971. The run itself was impressive considering that Janis Joplin had died five months earlier. But her last solo studio album stands as a testament to the greatness of the Texas singer. Also, in 1977 Ray Charles was attacked on stage at a charity concert. The attacker tried to strangle him with a microphone cord. Greg decides that February 29th should also be included in the show and he gives us the very depressing fact that Davey Jones died on February 29th a few years ago. In 1964 the Beatles started filming their brilliant musical/comedy ‘A Hard Days Night‘. We then close out this half of the show with the Foo Fighters live debut and some more celebrity deaths.

Jimi Hendrix live at the Temple De Hirsch Sinai

We have more music history on Follow the Sound this week. We start out with the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix playing his first ever gig at Temple De Hirsch Sinai synagogue in Seattle in 1959. Coincidentally, this week in 1969 Jimi played his last UK show with the Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Royal Albert Hall. Also, we discuss Pink Floyd starting their first sessions at the EMI Studios in St. John’s Wood, London on their debut album ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn‘, and Dolly Parton starting a two week run at No.1 on the US charts with ‘9 to 5’. We have a few tragic moments this week, as well, with the death of 100 people after a fire broke out at a Great White show and Andy Warhol dying after a gall bladder operation. Fleetwood Mac won album of the year in 1978 for the album ‘Rumours’ and Norah Jones swept the Grammys in 2003. All this and more on this music history episode of Follow the Sound.

How were the Grammys? Meh.

How were the Grammys? Meh.

The Grammys have come and gone again this year. The performances were fairly uneventful, the acceptance speeches were pretty standard, and James Corden was adequate as the host. However, this all translated into a pretty boring Grammys. Brian and Greg bring in a few friends to help discuss this thoroughly monotonous. Bri Park, a.k.a. DJ – Lady Scratch and Jacob Krumm join the show this week to give their perspectives. They start off with performances they thought were the best and worst and talked a bit about the mediocre showings from many artists. The group then moves on to the nominees, winners, and losers of the night. Who got what they deserved, who was robbed, and who lost gracefully. The show closes out with Brian ripping apart claims that Beyonce lost due to racism and explaining that if “Queen Bey” wants to win Album of the Year, she should actually make a better album.

‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling’

On this episode of Follow the Sound, we get into some more music history. The show kicks off with the rise of the Righteous Brothers and their Phil Spector-produced song, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’. And, we talk about the band’s impact on music as a whole with their blue-eyed soul. We also discuss The Beatles flying to America for the first time and being greeted by thousands of fans. In 1994, the British band Oasis was forced to cancel their first foreign tour due to the band being involved in a drunken brawl on a cross-channel ferry. We get into several Beatles events that all happened on February 9th. February 9th saw several events involving the Beatles, including their first performance at the Cavern Club, an incredible debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, and the premier of Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields on Top of the Pops. And finally, we talk about Glenn Miller and his Orchestra being awarded the first ever gold record for their hit song, Chattanooga Choo Choo. We close out the show with a little talk about number 1 hits of the past and celebrity birthdays. Join us for this episode of Follow the Sound!

On this episode of Follow the Sound, we delve into the music history of the week. Brian brings in his friend Greg Harvey and the guys start out the show in 1956 with Cleveland’s ban on dancing in public and follow it up by talking about a little-known band from Liverpool known as The Quarrymen. In 1958, the band played for the first time at the Cavern Club. Members of The Quarrymen would play there again three years later, but under their new name, The Beatles. Petula Clark gains a number one hit in the US and UK charts with the song, “Downtown”. Session guitarist Jimmy Page played on the track, making it the first number one hit for the future Led Zeppelin member. In 1980, Prince made his television debut on the hit television show, American Bandstand. After his performance, Prince froze and had trouble answering questions. And, 2015 saw Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne receive writing credits for Sam Smith’s hit song, “Stay With Me”.  Brian and Greg close out the show discussing some significant birthdays and songs which topped the charts. Boy & Bear is an indie folk-rock band from Australia. Their layering of music, combined with elegant and moving lyrics, gives them a sound that is both emotional and calming. On Harlequin Dream, the band flows seamlessly through each song with the grace and precision of seasoned songwriters. Each aspect of the album tells a story that can be interpreted in several ways. For some, it’s country and folk. For others, it’s rock in the vein of early Fleetwood Mac. Either way, you should listen to this band!

Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats are a band that is solidly anchored in rhythm and blues. However, their musical branches spread out to numerous other genres and styles. Rateliff fronts the band with a powerfully commanding voice and heartfelt lyrics while the Night Sweats create an insanely tight sound, blowing away most bands today. Brian Krock and special guest Tony Hubert go through this brilliant self-titled album and explain exactly why they love this phenomenal band! Join us for this episode of Follow the Sound!

the_band_album_coverartThe Band‘s self-titled album is hands down one of my favorite albums. The complexity of musical arrangements and the simplicity of toe-tapping good tunes propels this album beyond a mere “good album”. The vocal work alone of the members is enough to give them a place of high ranking. Get this album and give it a good listen. It deserves it.
